First, to appear ‘more masculine’, men report engaging in health practices and soliciting medical services (e.g., mewing and leg lengthening). Aligning with arguments that Courtenay's framework is overly simplified (Griffith 2024), we assert that looksmaxxing evidences a feedback loop between masculinity and health. Future research could examine if for‐profit health/medical companies orient their services to looksmaxxing discourses.
In the study, men who received testosterone were more responsive to social evaluation. And when levels drop, the impact can ripple into how we see ourselves and how we relate to others. From mental clarity to emotional regulation, testosterone has a hand in many brain functions we rely on every day. On World Brain Day, it’s worth exploring how testosterone influences not just your body but also your mind and relationships. Some studies have found that testosterone affects men and women differently, especially in social and emotional contexts. This study suggests that combining testosterone with positive social environments or feedback-based therapies might improve self-esteem more effectively than either approach alone.
Self-esteem can be severely affected by some of the symptoms of low testosterone levels, such as low libido, depression, weight gain, and insomnia. Low testosterone’s impact on mental health can vary based on the individual. Therefore, when your testosterone levels drop, it could significantly affect your mental well-being. Evidence proposes that testosterone can shield the impact of stress on mental health and increase emotional stability and resilience.
This hormone affects the brain in various ways crucial to mental health, such as stress response, cognition, memory, and mood. Usually, men start treatment for clinical depression when the cause of their depressed mood is, in actual cases, low testosterone levels. As the body’s functions change with age and levels of testosterone reduce with age, memory functions also decline. Understanding the psychology of hormones can help you take back control, not just of your health, but also of your confidence, relationships, and mindset. On World Brain Day, let’s remember that men’s mental health matters and that hormones are part of that conversation.
As testosterone levels increase, men often experience a renewed sense of energy and motivation. TRT can help address these issues by restoring testosterone levels to a more optimal range. Elevated cortisol levels can affect testosterone levels and increase your risk of ED.
Finally, we contend that men in the looksmaxxing community experience masculine demoralisation as users consider self‐harm because they view themselves as ‘failed men’. As we conclude, the community buttresses hegemonic masculinity and male supremacy while harming the health of men and boys who participate. Third, despite being positioned as a support community, we contend that the looksmaxxing community subjects men to masculine demoralisation by denigrating users' appearances and encouraging them to complete suicide. By enhancing sexual health, TRT can significantly impact a man’s self-confidence and self-image. TRT can help alleviate these symptoms by restoring testosterone levels to a healthier range. Low testosterone levels can negatively impact a man’s self-confidence. Men’s health, particularly as it relates to testosterone, requires a holistic approach that considers both physical and mental health aspects.
